The DAAD in Thailand
The DAAD has been active in Thailand for around 60 years. In 1957, the first German lecturer was sent to the Chulalongkorn University. Nowadays, the DAAD is represented at Thai universities through three language lecturers, two language assistants and two special lecturers in the fields of engineering and law. The tasks of the DAAD are numerous: Besides university teaching, our focus lies on consultation about study and research in Germany. Each year, the DAAD awards more than 300 scholarships to Thai students, researchers and university staff. The funding reaches from individual scholarships to the financial support of scientific projects, university cooperations and conferences.
For example, the DAAD funds the „German-Southeast Asian Center of Excellence for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPG)” at Thammasat University and the „Sirindhorn International Thai-German Graduate School of Enginnering (TGGS)“ at the King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB). Furthermore, the DAAD provides scholarships in the framework of the „SEAMEO TROPMED Network“ and at the „Asian Institute of Technology (AIT)“. These few examples are speaking for the flourish and long-standing partnership between Thai and German higher education institutions.
